question about backup scheme -- archive?

I am thinking about how to structure a remote backup. Local drive on server will get rysnc'd to a remote server. Local drive storage is 100GB, remote is same. If I'm backing up at 24hr intervals (every night), isn't there some need to archive a few days' worth of data? ie, do any of you find that a customer gets in touch and needs to restore data from more that a day ago? What if they lose data say on Monday at 8PM - then my system backs up remotely at 12AM, basically backing up their loss. What I really need is an older backup.

I like the idea or rsync-ing and the fact that everything can be a cron job. I don't think I want to get into tape archiving but is that the solution? Anyone doing this and can tell me about costs? The server would be colo so I guess the datacenter would have to do tape swaps - is that expensive?

Thank you -
d.
