Afterthought ? on IPchains/FW/Proxyservers et al..

Should have included this in my first post, but imagine makes no diff
as 1 ? always leads to more.
I've gleened that CW is to FW a host server and my experience is
limited to my home network (i'm a programmer, not a netadmin guy)
so based on that i realize that proxy's can also be FW's.
But am i correct in assuming that a proxyserver is unrelated to a host server
and its only the firewall that's relevant?
Is there any standard approach to setting up a FW?
I've familiarized myself w/posts ref'ing Eth0, ShoreWall, and such
but is RfxNetworks/Bfd all I need to FW my box, or do you guru's
find that manually tweaking ipchains/iptables/ipfwadm is more effective/better?

TIA
