Hosting, RAID cfg, IP's

Hello All:
I just subscribed and am excited to find this great place.
First me: BS/CS, LAMP programmer since pl.99, always in
somebody else's cubicle. Many up's and downs, pink slips and such,
now setting off on my own as a siteOp and hoster.
So, Its sunday night and I've spent the w/e going over the
general and tech forums soas not to post 'asked^answered' ?'s or
have someone tell me to RTFpostHosting, RAID cfg, IP's Not finished yet, and TIA for
all the great input i've already digested, but i'm
under time constraint so I am hoping someone can help out.

I've checked out providers and winnowed my prefs down to
johncompanies and serverbeach.
SB is offering a 1may05 deal which is the precedent for this post.
But both offer just what i'm looking for, appear economical, with
decent support systems. Each has been pretty forthcomming in reply
to my many questions to understand bandwidth/data-xfer, hardware, OS, price...
but there are distinctions in their menus.
I'm tempted to go with SB because of xfer (2000G vs 40G),
and slightly lower lease costs on basically equivalent platforms (fc3).
($159: athlon2200/1Gram/2x80Gdrives/100mbps vs $159: P4/1Gram/2x80Gdrives/10mpbs)

I intuitively feel like i'll get better tech help from JS,
tho i like the fact that SB has a forum section for its users.
But my main concern is SB has no RAID setup whereas JC installs RAID by default.
SB's reason is stated that they won't do anything to mess w/clients data,
a somewhat reasonable explanation for non-managed. and they say hardware RAID is
only a month or so away.

Does anyone know how i could configure
RAID on the 2nd drive 'after' the OS has been installed?
Since the OS is a 'machine' install i know I may have to rebuild the kernel
but maybe i'm missing something else?

Next ? My box is for webhosting and I'd like some input on IPs.
JC offers 8 free IP's, SB $2/IP/month. Now,
I thought conventional usage was to have a separate IP for ea. boxen on a subnet;
time.blah.name, smpt.blah.name, news.blah.name;
one deviation maybe being a virtualhost on a box which needs an SSL cert requiring
its own unique IP?

I realize I can virtualhost sites on apache all pointing to one IP.
But is having =>2 sites with their own IP any benefit?
For example, say my primary website is blah.name and resides on 192.168.0.2
It has a child site called foo. Would i want the domain name fooblah.name to point to
foo.blah.name 192.168.0.3, where 0.2 and 0.3 both reference the same hostbox?
And then barblah.name --> bar.blah.name (0.4) ...
How would i do that, in /etc/hosts only or do i need bind/resolve on something?
Or should I just code the URLs as foo.blah.name and save the registration costs?
Or am I (prob) missing something?

TIA folks
