Spammer techniques

Well, we stopped hosting the email for a domain MONTHS ago because of the amount of spam that it was receiving. We still host the website, but the MX records have been pointing to a different service for months.

We still see massive spam attacks towards the domain even though the MX record has been pointing elsewhere for months. Is it possible that they are looking up the nameservers that host the domain and then spamming the MX records of the hosts domain??
