server load too high and apache crash

hi,

I have a box
p4 3ghz HT
1G Ram
250HHD
CentOS
hosting 4 domains: one is forum (very buzy) one is video medial files
Server got over load up to 54.80 (2 CPU). and everytime I add batch image using coppermine gallery, server loading is also High.. up to 4.56 and cause the apache crash .
Is there any way to optimize and prevent CPU from overload and apache crash ?
