Dealing with/fixing kernel panic problem?

Hey guys,

Can anyone point me in the right direction for working out the cause of kernel panics, and how to deal with them? I've searched on google and read quite a number of pages about it, but I can't find anything which actually helps me out in any way. With my problem being on remote server, and with me not being very Linux savvy, I'm totally lost. My server has been running fine for about a year with more or less no problems, but yesterday / today, it seems to have gone totally bizarre.

I tried an experimental upgrade to Apache2 - compiled into a different directory - which failed. I removed the folder afterwards, and I can't see how the compiling of apache 2, or removing, would be the cause of my problems. But always worth a mention. About an hour later on, however, the server froze entirely for no obvious cause. Didn't think much of it, but since then, I've not been able to get anywhere since.

Tried to recompile apache using WHM, thinking I might have broken something in there - kernel panic

Wondered if something server critical was broken, so in WHM I ran update software, then update server - kernel panic during the second.

Removed APF, and IPTABLES service, as the technician for the server mentioned a message regarding it round about the time the kernel panicked. Reboot server; try to run upcp so I can get things working again, still no joy. - kernel panic

Disabled more services, tried running /scripts/upcp - kernel panic.

Tried booting with a different kernel version. Again, server freezes when trying to update CPanel. - kernel panic

I don't think this is related to Cpanel in any way, I just need to get it updated before going on to recompile Apache itself. I guess I'm missing something of critical importance here. Someone mentioned it might be related to IO, but personally I have no idea. I'm slightly loathed to go straight to paying a technician to fix things as I make no money from the server / sites on it, and with no guarantee on the time it could take to fix, it could end up being pretty expensive at general hourly rates for server administration.

One thing to note is it the server will still respond to ping when the kernel panics, but all other services seem to go down (SSH, etc).

Help/advice/points/anything is appreciated Dealing with/fixing kernel panic problem? I imagine my server is getting fed up with remote reboots by now Dealing with/fixing kernel panic problem?
