RAID 5: Never again

The last Virtuozzo node we setup was config'd with RAID 5.

This is the last time time we will use RAID 5 in any intensive I/0 setup.

We're setting up another IBM right now with RAID 10 & are going to have to migrate over a dozen VE's to a new box, & then format & reconfig the RAID 5 machine.

It's odd because with the IOMETER benchmarks we had done before provisioning the box everything looked OK w/RAID 5.

Anyway, anyone that's about to setup a VZ node, don't use RAID 5. BTW we're talking about this config:

Quad 2.8 MP Xeon
6GB RAM
Intel SRCU42 RAID controller w/256MB Cache
Seagate 10K.7 146GB 10K's Ultra320

And HD performance is horrible. In any event, this is just a rant. Please, if you're setting up a VZ node, don't use RAID 5.

Best of luck,
Vasili & team
