security updates on FreeBSD?

for some reason, the /var/log/security log is not being updated:

-rw------- 1 root wheel 34225 Jul 6 18:44 security

in fact, this log is pretty weird...
there're some entries on Apr 28 and Apr 29...
then it jumps to a few entries on May 6 and then some more on Jun 13 and Jul 6

any one know what makes it updates?
