prevent site content from being stolen
I'm new to the forum and this is my very first post here. I've a question which I sincerely seek some advice and guidelines from the veterans out there.
I'm not a webhost by the way. I'm a programmer/designer. I've stumbled upon a couple posts on how the sites owners web content are being stolen and ripped by their web hosts, it highlights some of my concerns recently.
1) What are the feasible security measures I can undertake to ensure my site content is not being tampered and stolen by my web host?
2) Does the web host has access to all the emails and files uploaded to my server? Will their login access be transparent or hidden to us?
3) I've recently signed up for a web hosting service whereby I do not have access to change my password. For every password changed, I've to inform my webhost and they will set that for me. Is this the normal practice?
4) How can I protect my site's content to prevent it from being stolen by the host?
The reason I'm concerning of the privacy and security issue is because I've recently developed a web based programme for sale. I really do not want to have night mares or restless nights worrying my web host is going to steal my programme and have it installed and resale without my knowledge.
I've spent months and months of hard work to develop the programme and I want to ensure I can extend as much protection over it as possible within my knowledge, limits and control.
I believe you guys(designers, programmers, developers) will understand how I feel. I'm not rich enough to patent it nor it can be copyrighted but this is my intellectual property which I really do not want others to rip it off.
I'm thinking if I should sign up as a reseller instead and have controls over the hosting aspect and sell the programme together with the hosting service. For this, I can ensure only paying customers are able to use my programme.
Am I being over paronoid that web host will have the access to rip site's content? As a paying customer of web hosting services, what rights do we have and how can we protect our intellectual property?
What are the protection measures I can look into to minimize the chances of site's content and files being stolen?
