Raid 1 - Question about reliability/corruption
We've been running primary SCSI drives with a backup drive for 9+ years, and have recently began looking at a Raid 1 setup (2 SCSI drives) with a 3rd backup drive as well.I understand the concept of Raid 1, but had a few questions about reliability and performance.
1. Can a hardware Raid 1 setup encounter a corrupt RAID array, requiring a lengthy rebuild process? If it can, what could cause such corruption? Raid 1 would be to increase reliability, so the possibility of it becoming corrupt would counter this benefit I would think.
2. What sort of performance downgrade would we see for a standard P4 server with SCSI drives running RHEL 3.x with hardware Raid 1. Will it severely impact server performance for a machine running Apache/Mysql/Email?
Thanks for any suggestions / comments you can provide.
