Finding a cheap solutions for my server backup
Hi Guys,Currently I have the following server configuration and I would like to find a cheap way of doing a backup for my server
Current Server - Server 1
Dell PowerEdge 1850 with Dual Intel Xeon 3.0Ghz/1M, EM64T, 800MHz FSB
RHEL 4
2GB (1 x 1GB) DDR-2 400MHz ECC 1R memory
Dell PERC4/SC Raid Controller (1x Internal Channel)
1.44MB 3.5" floppy drive
2 x 146GB Ultra 320 (10K RPM) SCSI Hard Drive (configured to RAID 1)
24x IDE slim CD-Rom drive
Integrated Dual Intel Gigabit Network Card
Integrated Single Channel Ultra 320 SCSI Controller
Expansion Riser: 2x PCI-X slots (No ROMB)
I'm thinking of getting a cheaper server, maybe a Dell PowerEdge 1425 with the following configuration
Plan server - Server 2
Dell PowerEdge 1425 with Intel Xeon 3.0Ghz/1M, EM64T, 800MHz FSB
RHEL 4
1GB (2x512) DDR-2 400MHz ECC 1R memory
1.44MB 3.5" floppy drive
1 x 146GB Ultra 320 (10K RPM) SCSI Hard Drive (configured to RAID 1)
24x IDE slim CD-Rom drive
Integrated Dual Intel Gigabit Network Card
Integrated Single Channel Ultra 320 SCSI Controller
can I create a backup solutions this way? meaning, all the data from Server 1 will automatically be written to Server 2 ie, if server 1 goes down, server 2 will automatically take over? How can I do it?
On server one, I will be running the following software:-
RHEL 4, Apache, PHP, Plesk, MySQL PostageSQL, Tomcat
I believe I must have the same kind of software on Server 2 also right? If I do it this way, I'm doing a server redundancy right?
What if all I want to do is to backup all the data and system files from Server 1 to Server 2 and not create a server redundancy, is that logical? How can I do it and what extra software do I need?
I know I can get a tape backup but that required me to change the tape everything and my server is at the DC so it is not possible. Also, tape backup is expensive.
Please advise. thanks
