can access ftp space but not the www.site.com, why?

so this morning am trying to access my .com website and got a "could not locate server" message. So I open up my FTP software and I could access easlity the content of my FTP website.

why one is working and not the other?

there is a way to check where is the problem from for accessing my website.... it can be the hosting or the .com registar?
