recommended amount of swap space?

I'm deciding on how much swap space I should setup in my new server... hopefully I won't be needing the swap space, but in any case I'm not certain exactly how much hdd space I should dedicate to swap...

The server has two 246 Opteron CPUs and 8gb of RAM... will be using CentOS 4.2...

I've read on many sites that 2x RAM is the norm, but I think those recommendations are from some years ago when most systems did not have much RAM due to expense or system design.

So, I'm thinking 1 or 2gb just to be safe... Would that be a *proper* amount to use for a server with 8gb of RAM?

Any advice on this is appreciated.
