What should I know

First i have to apologise for my poor english, I´m only a Austrian Student (Maths, first semester).

Now my little Problem, i want to make a projekt with some friends, called Why Maths, and for this we´ll need a Web Hoster (we already have one) and some Know How.

So my question, what should we know to run a server (Programming Languages, ....).
Everyone of us knows very good how to handle with Microsoft Windows and its application but we have never managed a server.

We mostly want to use the server as an FTP Server, to host a Web Page (we all are quite good in Web Design) and maybe an IRC Server.
