Question about Setting up Exchange

One of our clients want to have exchange for their messaging while a linux server for their web/mysql content.

From what I've read, Exchange should be setup on a seperate server thats not your web server/primary server. Is it possible to have this primary server a linux server and exchange as a mail server?
