Reccomendations
Hi their, i currently know very little about linux, infact about the most ive ever done is login to shell, and install an irc bouncer (and even that was a few years back now!)I only have windows servers. However being a geek i figured i cant not learn linux!
Im going to get myself a old low-spec dedicated server (or maybe VPS - still considering) as a test bed to learn. I wondered if anyone could list any websites with guides to setting up mailservers, ftp daemons, webservers *servers under a linux environment, general server management to keep a system optimized and probably most essential initial security (changing ssh port blocking brute force setting up iptables absed firewalls etc).
Also any books people reccomend for as above (i still find books sometimes a more usefull resource than google if you get a good one!)
Where do you linux gurus go with regards to security holes? are their any security sites with guides to how to patch holes as they come out - or is it all passed on via word of mouth.
What are the "essentials" ive heard of people suggesting mod_security and other plugins (is it right to say plugin?) for apache.
I know i could get server management and so on but it isnt a production server ~(or rather wont be) it will literally be a testbed for myself to learn on.
I also know people will say "pick up an old machine and try it at home save yourself some money" - again ive thaught of this but things for example name servers require static ips which my isp doesnt offer and i would prefer to learn in a more realistic environment (atleast for the sake of $20 monthly http://lowcostdedi.co.uk) and similar sites.
So - hit me with your suggestions, looking forward to hearing your comments and suggestions. Thanks in advance
