How do I diagnose server issues in WHM?

To what extent can you diagnose server issues in WHM?

I have a managed server. It's usually worry free, but occasionally the odd hiccup occurs. Each time, I contact my host Myles at www.prioritycolo.com to look into it and the issue gets resolved (always in record time).

Today, I noticed that server load is a bit on the high side for several hours. After sending in a support ticket, it is fixed right away. Apparently, WHM locked on trying to install a couple of Perl scripts.

So here's my question. When I see a high server load, what are the recommended steps that I should take in WHM to diagnose the problem? How do I isolate a runaway script or whatever it is that is causing the problem? What can be done in WHM before having to go to the command line? I'm not very good in SSH so I prefer to explore all other options in WHM.

Yeah, I know, I'm paying to have my box managed, so I can just easily get my host to take care of it. But to be honest, I really would like to be able to take care of these small issues on my own.
