Mysql mysql_secure_installation problems..

i`ve installed the mysql when i`ve installed the system and i didn`t put any password for mysql

Enter current password for root (enter for none):
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

now i`ve try to install mysql-standard-4.0.23 and when i`ve give the ./mysql_secure_installation command i received this message

i`ve enter the root passwod that i use to login and nothing i left it blank and the same message .. what i need to do to make it work
