bandwidth usage being wrong

Is it possible to have a bad switch that would say you are using more bandwidth then the server does?

i have several servers and today looked at a invoice for over BW usage from my provider for over 1000 gigs which in the past never used more then 25 a month. There graphs show my server using 2012 gigs in jan but when i do ifconfig it shows only around 3 gigs for the past 42 days since last reboot.

Now what else could be wrong with this picture or am i doing something wrong?
