GoDaddy launches Airo for WordPress to simplify AI-powered website building

Building a WordPress site has always involved a choice that nobody particularly enjoys making. Use a simple website builder and accept its limitations, or commit to WordPress and accept the complexity that comes with it. For small businesses and agencies, that tradeoff has quietly cost a lot of time over the years. GoDaddy is now taking a direct run at it.

The company this week launched Airo for WordPress, an AI experience that works directly inside the native WordPress dashboard. Users can build a fully functional site through a conversational chat interface without touching a separate builder tool or learning a parallel plugin system. The AI handles plugin installation and configuration automatically based on what the business actually needs.

What makes this worth paying attention to is the scope beyond initial setup. Most AI website tools focus on getting a site live and then step back. Airo continues working after launch, letting users update pages, create blog posts, refresh product listings, and make ongoing changes through single-prompt instructions. The site can keep evolving without requiring a developer for every update.

Bhala Dalvi, vice president of engineering at GoDaddy, described the core tension the product addresses directly. Website builders have historically been easy but limiting, while WordPress has been capable but demanding. The goal with Airo is to remove that forced choice by combining AI speed with the full depth of the WordPress ecosystem.

That ecosystem access matters considerably. Users retain more than 60,000 plugins, full ownership of their site and data, and no platform lock-in. For agencies managing multiple client sites, that flexibility is meaningful in practical terms. Additionally, anyone wanting to sell online can generate a complete WooCommerce storefront through a single conversation, without manual configuration.

The broader picture here connects to a wider shift in how website creation tools compete. Increasingly, the differentiator is not whether a platform supports AI during setup. It is whether AI remains useful across the entire lifecycle of the site afterward. GoDaddy is positioning Airo specifically around that ongoing relationship rather than treating launch as the finish line.

For entrepreneurs and small businesses that need a capable web presence without a dedicated technical team, that framing addresses something real. Getting online fast matters. Staying relevant afterward matters just as much.
