Automattic, WP Engine feud deepens as legal battle over WordPress trademarks intensifies
Automattic and WP Engine have reignited one of the WordPress ecosystem’s most divisive debates as their long-running feud takes another turn. They first clashed over trademarks and community values, but the dispute has now escalated into a bitter legal battle that could redefine how the platform manages its identity.
Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and led by co-founder Matt Mullenweg, filed a new counterclaim last week accusing WP Engine of deceptive business practices and false advertising. The filing spans 162 pages and accuses the hosting firm of misusing the WordPress and WooCommerce trademarks for profit while offering little back to the open-source community that powers them.
The fight goes deep into the history of the time when towards the end of 2024 Mullenweg in a public manner, criticized WP Engine for benefiting from the popularity of WordPress without giving back proportionately to its development. The argument became more severe when Automattic limited the access of WP Engine to some of the resources of WordPress.org and also tightened the community sponsorship policies, a step, which developers and users protested vehemently.
According to the latest motion, Automattic alleges that, after the acquisition of WP Engine by private equity firm Silver Lake, the latter decided to cut the essential features of the product and thereby reduce the quality of the product in order to increase the profitability. Automattic also alleges WP Engine exaggerated its role in maintaining WordPress’s code base while pursuing what it describes as an inflated valuation strategy.
Although WP Engine previously secured a favorable court ruling, Automattic’s new legal offensive suggests it isn’t backing down. The company asked for a jury trial, intending to demonstrate that WP Engine’s activities resulted in defamation of the WordPress brand and caused confusion among its users.
What started as a legal dispute has now pushed the open-source community to question issues of governance, transparency, and ownership within WordPress. Members of the community are raising concerns about how a project built on collaboration continues to struggle with recurring power conflicts.
