DP World Tour turns to AWS as it builds more data driven future for global golf
The DP World Tour has taken a decisive step in reshaping how fans experience tournament play, selecting Amazon Web Services as its official cloud provider. The partnership reflects the tour’s attempt to modernize an operation that moves from country to country, often with entirely different technical hurdles each week. It also highlights a growing shift across major sports as organizations look for ways to make live coverage more meaningful and less static.
Under the agreement, the tour will run its media archive through a cloud based system that applies automated tagging to video assets. This approach aims to help editors and analysts search years of footage far more quickly. The shift may seem subtle, yet it gives the organization a way to organize a massive library that has become increasingly difficult to manage.
AWS will also help develop a digital model of each course. The so called virtual twin pulls in millions of data points and gives broadcasters a chance to show terrain, wind patterns, and shot paths with a level of detail that was rarely possible in earlier broadcasts.
Nina Walsh, who leads global initiatives for sports and media at AWS, described the challenge with an unusually candid note. She said, “Building an AI system that understands golf’s nuances is incredibly complex.” She added that the goal is to let fans see a shot and immediately understand its context, along with the pressure surrounding it.
Michael Cole, chief technology officer for the DP World Tour, offered a grounded view of the weekly reality behind the scenes. He said, “A golf tournament is one of the most complex events to deliver in professional sport,” and noted that staging an event in remote regions often resembles building a temporary city from scratch. By shifting key services into the cloud, he believes the tour can deliver more consistency, regardless of geography.
In the past few years, AWS has spread its influence broadly in the sports field, with the NBA and the NFL as some of its partners. The agreement with the DP World Tour is a clear indication of how technology has become the core of the fans’ experience of a live competition.
