What could have happened here?

When I checked my email this morning, I recieved many "Server Down" messages from Alertra. I also recieved these messages from my server

Apache has reached the MaxClients
limit. cPanel has increased the MaxClients limit to 160 (10 higher).

You may wish to suspend the user with the largest access log as they
are generally the person using up all of the avalible connections. However, your should
have your system admin verify this first.
[maxfilescheck] Apache on has exceeded the maximum amount of open
files
apache failed @ Tue Mar 18 01:25:24 2003. A restart was attempted automagicly.
I'm not sure if the Microsoft WebDAV vulnerability (Win 200 computers - Sort of like the Nimda virus) was the cause( I'm running Linux, not Windows) , but I have no way of know, as I'm missing a chunk in my log file from 1:03-1:35 AM. Any ideas? I attached my mrtg graph to show you the sheer velocity of the attack on my server.
