MSDE seems to have undergone a number of licensing changes recently and also on the official microsoft website they seem to be encouraging you to tweak it to increase the number of users you can have and still have acceptable performance.

Does anybody really understand how MSDE can be used in the web hosting environment?

Would customers be interested in using MSDE databases in their web hosting plans at smaller charges just to cover server costs as opposed to the large prices you have to cover SQL Server licensing?

Obviously on the last point I am talking about properly badging it as MSDE not passing it off as SQL Server.
