Shared SSL cert.: Serverwide or not?

I have a question about sharing a SSL cert.

Some Hosts offer a shared SSL cert which everyone can use to access his site securely. The URL for SSL access points to a subdirectory of the host's secure domain, like this:

https://www.secure.com/username/

where "username" is the account name of the virtual host.

Now I wonder, does this Host need one of these so called "server wide" certs, which cost 500$/year or something, or can he offer this with an ordinary 90$ cert?

It was my understanding so far that serverwide certs allow different subdomains to be accessed securely as well, whereas the normal certs don't. In the above example (I've seen a host using this type of URLs for SSL), no subdomains are needed, therefore I guess they can offer this with an ordinary cert, no need for the expensive one.

Am I right?
Thanks
