Having a problem with mail relay.

Hello All!

I am having a problem with a new application I built. It has to do with sending email via an ASP page.

My current host requires a local address in the "from" or "to" field to send an email via ASP. One of the functions of this application is to send subscription requests for different publications.

I was able to accomplish this by using a local address as the "from" field, the subscribing address as the "reply-to" field, and the external list server address as the "to" field. Most list servers subscribe the "reply-to" address and IF it does not exist, then they read the "from" field.

To my disappointment, I have discovered that there is at least one list server (and maybe more) that does not recognize the "reply-to" field at all and goes directly to the "from" field. Thus subscribing my local address.

So I thought maybe if I used a local address as the "to" field, the subscribing address as the "from" field, and the list server address as a "CC" it would work. But, because I have an external address in the CC field the server throws a 550 (mail relay) error. I would think it would be allowed, because the "to" field is local... but I guess it isn't.

It is rather important that I find a hosting solution for this that will work, but at the same time prevent spammers from relaying mail through my smtp server.

I am by no means an expert on relaying email, but I have seen the phrase "IP Checking" around and I think that's what I need. It would be great if I could have the "from" and "to" fields be external, but still prevent spamming. If I can avoid going dedicated, I would prefer it.

Anyway, I know you are willing to offer your far superior knowledge about this subject, so feel free to offer host suggestions or general advice.

(If you are a host and would like to talk with me, use the email button below)

Thanks,
Michael

p.s. Some of my current plans features are: Windows NT, IIS4, ASP, Perl 5.6, PHP4, Web Email, Imail List server, Livestats, Online Control Interface, Access to raw logs. I am looking for comparable features in a new host.
