ISP's restricting SMTP access
Last night I was on the phone with my isp's tech support (msn) . I was having a problem sending email with my email client Microsoft Outlook XP. I spent about 35 minutes on the phone with standard tech support and they could not help me. So she forwarded me to Advanced Tech support. He gave me the low down on just what MSN does.It turns out MSN restricts access to port 25 (smtp) to help prevent users on their servers from spamming. He also went into detail about how other isp's (roadrunner, eart*****, etc...) are stepping up measures to prevent spam.
I was talking to my boss at affordablehost.com about what could be done to allow me to send mail. She told me that she had opened up port 2525 for SMTP connections, for users who cannot send email with outlook. I tested sending email with that email account by connecting to port 2525 on smtp. It turns out that it actually works.
So now, I urge all of you to open port 2525 up on your servers to send email. On your web site you should also give directions on how to configure outlook express, or outlook retail to connect to port 2525 on smtp connections.
