strange slow transfer speeds
i hope someone can help me. i have a hostmania VPS account. When I first got it, i downloaded a file from my server at about 95 kbps (I've got DSL). One day (dunno exactly when), transfer speeds slowed to around 15 kbps. Actually when I download a file from my server (via HTTP), it starts at around 21 kbps, jumps to around 49 kbps, then back down to 21 kbps, then slowly goes down to about 15 kbps where the speed is pretty steady (at 15 kbps). Same thing when I download via FTP from my server (so I know it's not an Apache problem). I'm pretty sure its a network problem, but hostmania doesn't know what's wrong. They even moved my VPS to a physically different machine but that didn't fix the problem. I opened another VPS account with them to see if it was any better. It was a lot better, download speeds averaged around 95 kbps. So, careful that I didn't accidentally re-create the problem with my first VPS, I uploaded my web documents and installed ImageMagick. I also changed one thing in sendmail.mc and rebuilt sendmail.cf. (I took out the smrsh feature). Anyway, somehow I re-created the problem and download speeds matched those of my first VPS. I was dumbfounded. Steady download speeds were at around 15 kbps. It's not my connection at home, because I get the same results when I download a file from my server from my school which has like a T1 connection. Anyway, hostmania allows you to open trial VPS's. I've got to admit that I have opened several trial accounts just to test the download speeds to see if the problem was with just my individual VPS or if it was with all of the VPS's. Seems I'm the only one with the problem. I have checked out the processes running on my VPS and there's absolutely nothing out of the ordinary running. I checked netstat, no strange connections to/from my server. I have a feeling it's a network problem, but I just don't know what. Anyway, I uninstalled ImageMagick, rebuilt sendmail.cf with the original .mc file, restarted Apache with the original config file, and removed everything I uploaded. Still the same slowness. My sites aren't heavy traffic sites either, so that's not even an issue. I think this message is getting long now, so if anybody has any ideas, please reply back! Thank you.~mioi
