We have a server that the procesess just keep increasing on. It seems we have to reboot it everyday, just to reset the process count. Just a few minutes ago, it had to be rebooted, because the number of processes was at 560. The number of defunct processes was at 250. I have seen it go as high as 1800. The problem seems to be that there are so many processes, that any new process will never get to run. In order to reboot the server, you must bypass going through init, or else the shutdown processes just pile up at the bottom and become defunct. The server load remains reasonable through-out all of this, I would say it never goes over 2. Has anyone had this happen before? What did you do to solve it? This is starting to annoy both us, and our clients.
