Netowrking gurus? Question.

Hello.

I've got a question and I'm no netowrking guru, so any help would be appreciated. I have a linux box that I want to use for testing netowrk traffic. What I want to do is to make this box something that can grab fraffic to/from a particular downstream.

For example. If I have the following setup (see image) :

I would like to place the linux box in between a router and whatever connects to it.

I'm sure this can be done. What do I need to do/read? Would this basically make the linux box a "router" where I'd just need to bone up something like the Linux Router Project? Or am I missing something here?

The linux box would be something relatively weak 1ghz Celeron, 2 ethernet cards, hdd, etc. nothing too fancy -- wouldn't need to be, right?
