Need help with email/DNS/MX
My e-mail has been pretty iffy lately. Folks on our local ISP can't email me because the local ISP can't check the MX records. This has been going on for a few weeks off and on.
I contacted my local ISP after another bout and they replied with:
I dug back a ways in our maillog and found the errors you were talking about. The error that showed up in our logs when people were trying to send you mail earlier today was: 'cannot check MX records for recipient host northlander.com'. This error means that something wasn't set up right in the DNS records where your domain is being held - specifically, it's missing the MX records portion of the DNS setup, or the server was down so those
records weren't available. We have no control over the DNS setup at another hosting site - this is something they have to fix.
As a security issue, Boreal (and most ISPs) check for MX records before it sends mail, but not all ISPs check this. That's why some Boreal people couldn't mail you, while people at other ISPs may have been able to. It looks like they must have noticed and corrected the problem, which is why mail is going through to you now.
So then I contact OLM and give them this info. they repy with:
Our DNS servers have the correct MX records for your domain. They are always set up by default, but I just looked to make sure that yours are set up. You might want to see if your local ISP can reach our nameservers.
Our nameservers are:
ns1.*********.net
ns2.*********.net
If they want the IPs of those servers they are:
**.**.***.**
**.**.***.**
Your MX records correctly point to your domain name northlander.com and northlander.com points to your IP address: **.**.***.**
There shouldn't be anything else that needs to be in your MX records.
Please let us know if you have any other questions or need assistance with anything else.
No one seems to want to take responsibility for this and I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone have an idea?
