Gaming Servers / Information
I am seekign the wisdom of the WHT crowd for a dedicated customer of mine who runs gaming servers.. mainly counterstrike of some sorts.
He is currently running FreeBSD 4.8 stable.. here are the box specs
p4 2.4 533 FSB / 512k cache
512 MB RAM ddr (I know)
80 GB IDE drive 7200 RPM
Here are my questions for all of you.
Under those conditions how many servers do you think could be sold on that box? now I understand it matters per slot, So I will go with his current 'popular' plan which is 12 player private. I also want you to think about the fact that most of the times they wont be used at the same time, but the machine can't goto crap when they do.
Now besides that, do you think a linux flavor would work better for him then bsd? if so can you give some reasoning?
Any advice you can provide here about running gaming servers would be most helpful to him (and to me, I am quite curious).. I will be linking him here for your wisdom.
