NAS vs. File Server
Okay, here's a random question for the gurus. What's the difference between a NAS (Network Attached Storage) and a conventional file server?
My school bought an Iomega NAS (and paid through the nose for it; 100 GB of space for like $3,000), and during finals week the whole thing blew up. (Not literally...) The Iomega guy literally told my school's techs that it was worthless for a busy fileserver, which is what we used it for.
So what exactly is a NAS for, if it's not a fileserver? And what is the advantage of a NAS over a standard file server? (Especially when a fileserver could end up being significantly cheaper?!)
