DNS ddos attacks?

After reading about ddos attacks it occured to me that if somebody flooded important DNS servers with bogus domain requests, it could cause serious worldwide problems. The DNS servers would take the bogus domain requests and spit out loads of crap to other servers in an attempt to resolve them, causing a chain reaction that would clog up the Internet.

Have any hackers tried doing this before and if so, how did people stop the problem? Perhaps I'm just being a little paranoid here.
