payment gateway, need help

Hi, i need info/advice on payment gateway and merchant account. My understanding so far is that the payment gateway relays payment data to the merchant accounts to do transactions, is this right?

Well here's my problem. I'm building my first e-commerce site for an existing mom and pop small business. I think they already have some sort of a merchant account (not sure if you call them retail or..?). Now, do we have to get another merchant account specifically for the website? Or can we get a payment gateway service that works with the existing merchant account?
