Large Amounts of Processes - Help Please
I have a P4 2.0ghz 1 gb ram server from Rackshack. It is just one of thier Plain Redhat Linux servers.
Yesterday I was having problems with the number of processes exceeding the standard 256 set out in the Apache config file. We recompiled apache and increased the max to a very large number. We then set max processes to 1500.
Here is the strange thing. I was monitoring this server for 1 hour after rebooting, and processes stayed at about 88-90 on average. Everything was working fine.
Then, I come back to the computer 1 hour later, and all of a sudden the processes are over 1550. How can there be such a dramatic increase in the amount of processes in 1 hour? Is there any way we can find out what is causing this?
Any advice will be much appreciated.
