Hostnames and Reverse IP's

Forgive my bumbling innocence, this is all very new to me and has not been a matter of choice so I'm on one heck of a learning curve with server management.

Server has nameservers set up, theyre ok and everything is fine. I believe it should also have a hostname, seperately.

However, when I acquired the server, the domain PTR records were incorrect? so EV did a reverse IP and sent them back to the nameservers.

Now this hostname is also required to install a shared SSL, it will not work for love nor money. EV have assured me that they have reversed the IP to the hostname, but every entry into WHM gives me that nasty little box and however many times the right details are put in, it just appears next time I log in, suggesting its not working, in addition, calling the hostname fails.

Any suggestions of where to look next? and also any recommendations on books/resources so that I can try and understand not only what I'm doing, but why...
