DNS proper SYntax Question

Would anyone happen to know if the designation:

dns1.myserver.com is considered improper syntax ? Would it cause any issues having nameservers with that name?

I was playing around with powerdns and a how to written by a friend of mine and he reccomended using dns1 and dns2 for my nameservers. I'd never seen that used before and thought maybe it was a PowerDNS thing so I put in for them.

1 DC forwarded the information to thier DNS system and registrar with no problems-

My domain registrar, in this case EV1 - came back with - you cant use DNS1 and DNS2 - you have to use ns1 and ns2 - dns is improper syntax. (but they went ahead and put them into ICANN anyway.....)

In the meantime I recieved thie response and said oops - and reworked my nameservers as ns1 and ns2 -

NOW - I cant delete dns1 and dns2 nor can i use those ips for any other nameserver - they come up as being registered with ICANN and therefore cannot be deleted or reused..........

I either need to have the dns1 names deleted from ICANN or I need to go back to using them if they are not bad syntax - so any DNS gurus ?
