Latest Kernel/any kernel?

Hey guys, regarding kernels, is the latest the best? The reason I ask is, the latest seems to be 2.6.2, however choon was giving example of how to compile the 2.4 kernel, does this mean that the 2.6 is not that good?

How do you know which is suitable for you ro even for a server?

Anything I should be looking up regarding this?
