Newbie question on kernel

Ok, being a newbie at server admin, I have a couple of questions regarding kernel:

1) What exactly is the difference between kernel and apache?

2) How do I find out what version of kernel I have currently running, and what's the version I should be running right now for security/bug fixes? I do have access to WHM and cPanel, so if there's any easy way to tell without ssh, that'd be great.
