Apache just isnt playing ball

Hi all

I've installed apache, php, and mysql on countless PC's, and normally they get installed very easily. However, I'm trying to get a local server set up on my laptop, its a little old model made in 2000 and has Windows 98 on it. I'm setting up apache in the normal way, using the file apache_1.3.31-win32-x86-no_src off of the official site.

Installing program, defining my network domain, server and email name etc, then making sure htdocs is fine, but when i view the options in the start bar it only has the option run apache as a console, no start or stop options, then when i click on it, the dos program runs but then cuts out quickly, as if it hasnt responded. Then when i type localhost in internet explorer, it says page can not be found, it doesnt like it for some reason.

Anyone have similar probs, or think they know if this sounds like a classic mistake?? Thanks.
