need help with mod-rewrite

I want to turn my dynamic URLS search engine friendly, so I would like to use mod-re write to turn the following URL :
http://www.mysite.com/display.php?category=1&page=1
into something like:
http://www.mysite.com/display/category/1/1

can someone help me with simple steps on how to accomplish this?

I have read tutorials found on net, but cannot get it working, and im not sure whether or not mod rewrite is enabled on my server, how do we check?
