Problem while untaring nagios

I am getting the following error while untaring both the 1.2 and 1.1 version

#tar xfz nagios-1.1.tar.gz

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Need help
