"Referral" Spamming?
I've noticed an explosion of bogus referrals in some website statistics reports. What is this about?!
From what I can tell, some sort of agent/robot is traversing the Internet, faking the referring site information so that your website's "top referrers" reports is awash in bogus adult sites which, of course, contain no links (or relevance) to your website.
What's more, the source of these "visits" resembles a DDoS attack, but without the volume. They are originating from ISPs/Telecom providers all over the world. Somebody is going to a whole lot of trouble....
Is anybody else seeing this? Is there a name for this phenomena? I'm calling it "referral spamming" only because I can find no other discussion of it anywhere else on the 'Net. I'd like to know what others are saying/doing about it.
