Hardware vs. software firewalls

We have 2 transactional websites, both in PHP/MySQL. Currently we have a hardware firewall (Cisco Pix). We're thinking of switching hosts, and most of them are quoting us firewall software (such as IP tables), with an optional firewall hardware for more $$.


What are the benefits of hardware vs. software firewalls? is it worth spending the extra bucks on the hardware solution?
