install dell poweredge sc420 on 1U case? issues with freebsd 5.3?Has anybody installed freebsd 5.3 production release on sc 420?
Finally my sc420 came yesterday. Can't wait to rip out the guts and install it on the 1U BoomRack with 200W P/S that I bought for $20.
Now that I just found out that the motherboard for sc420 has a 24 pins atx power and the power supply for my 1U case comes with 20 pins power supply. I only planned on using the CPU/Motherboard, Mem, 1 SATA 80G HD 7200, 1 PATA 250G HD, 1 pci remote management card. 5 small fans inside the case, heatsink fan. My question is, will the 200W P/S be enough? I planned on using external usb cdrom and boot from it for the install only. So I can save space by not installing the cdrom internally. Because I planned on buying a 24 pins to 20 pins converter plug for atx power.
Damn I didn't expect that I would encounter so many problems trying to fit in on a 1U case. Of course, the reason why I went for sc420 because it's a great deal for the money. Now I have to look for heatsink for LGA775 with fan that will also fit on a 1U case. They're hard to find right now, especially something that would fit on a 1U.
Here's a vendor that only has a product for it. The problem is that it's only a passive heatsink. What I'm looking for is a active heatsink with fan solution.
Let's gather and share info on how to make this sc420 a great 1U solution for web/database/mail server.
while at it: can somebody recommend a cheap pci remote management card that would allow me to do hard reboot and bios over ip for cheap? IMPI? That would work with freebsd?
Thanks in Advance. I appreciate it.
