Regretting Fedora core 3 upgrade - HELP!

I just upgraded (downgraded) to fedora core 3 and seriously regretting it.

So - the /dev stuff it very very bizzare. The stock fedory kernels don't work. Locks up on boot because it can't do something with /initrd/dev

So - I'm running (barely) on my old 2.6.7 kernel I compiled myself. However ...

Every time I reboot it strips all the permissions from /dev/null and mass deletes devices that I'm using. Many services crash when they can't talk to /dev/null. I think it's related to the udev junk that I would love to get rid of at this point. What is deleting these devices and stripping the permissions from /dev/null?

I did the upgrade using yum - not from the CDs. That was probably a mistake - but yum is suppoed to be able to do that.

For those who are running Fedora Core 2 and thinking about upgrading - DON'T DO IT.

So - anyone know what I need to do you get back to where I can function?

Thanks in advance.
