SSH / Putty Probs

I just signed up with allmanaged.com and my new server is ready. My other current server is a windows based machine that I have a "terminal service" connection to. It's basically the server desktop on my local computer. So, I'm having a difficult time transitioning over to the linux world. I'm trying to SSH and get things set up on the server, so I can transfer the sites over.

I have CPanel, which I hope can handle everything I need to do. So, I'm hoping I don't even need the shell access. But I probably will at some point, so it'd be nice if it worked. Note: I have NO experience in linux. That's why we got a managed server. I just want to make sure I CAN get in if needed.

I downloaded Putty, as that was the recommended SSH client for windows. When I put in the IP and connect, it pops open the window asking for login name. I type in "root", hit enter and it asks for password. I type the password, but it doesn't do anything. It's as if my keyboard doesn't work. Maybe it's doing this to protect it from being seen, but even if I type it out, without feedback, it doesn't work. I've emailed support, they say it works for them.

Any ideas? (BTW, Caps lock is off)

Also, SSH is new to me, but I think I understand the concept. It's just a secure connection to a remote server, right? And, my second question is... is it recommended to use ssh to upload files? I currently use CuteFTP Pro as my FTP software. It supports secure connections, but I don't know how to set that up. This reminds me of a thrid question (sorry for my ignorance). When I log into Cpanel, i notice it doesn't work via https. Is that something I should ask allmanaged to set up, if it's even possible?

Thank you,
Anders
