Migration Advice
Hi, I've searched but can't seem to find anything that covers this situation. If there's a link, I'd appreciate it.I'm currently operating a reseller acct utilizing cpanel whm, etc. No problems. Occasional support ticket but nothing serious.
One of the accounts has grown to the point where I've put it in it's own "plan" so to speak, but continuing growth will eventually require a move to a VPS or possibly dedicated server.
I would like to "prepare" for such a move by becoming more "linux" literate - assuming I'll probably have to do more for myself in such an environment.
I have a pretty decent PC I can dedicate to a "training" environment or could even "lease" a small vps if that's the better solution.
Can someone recommend a training plan or tutorial for a good way to go about this? I have one for yolinux_dot_com/TUTORIALS/LinuxTutorialRedHatInstallation_dot_html for which I'm unable to post the correct url
which seems ok - other recommendations?
For example, I've experimented with Mandrake 10.1, but it seems quite a few things 'fail' to install correctly (gcc compiler compatability problems?) and I don't see any web hosting services running on Mandrake.
What linux and version would you recommend for a relative noob to use in his "first" proeduction environment or would you recommend a windows environment instead (I am fairly windows proficient, but every web service I've used has been linux - usually red-hat)
Red Hat seems to be pretty popular. Is that a good choice for a noob? If so, which version (seems 9 is pretty popular, I'm a little concerned about the new kernal in the current fedora - just for compatability - I don't want to be both a noob and bleeding edge).
In a nutshell, I'm looking for recommendations/advice from the "experts" - that's why I've come here.
Thanks for whatever you may have to offer.
cheers,
