Another CentOS problem

Hey everyone, it's a mess, I tried installing MYSQL from source, had a problem, reinstalled via RPM...that went ok, but MySql seemed unstable (complained a bit about errors) so I dumbly tried installing via YUM, which did work, but now Mysql won't start and I have no idea what to do to remove all instances of MySql and start over from scratch.

When I check Mysql it says:

[root@server root]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld status
mysqld dead but subsys locked

Thanks for any and all help.
